Important!
Safety during emergencies requires advance planning and preparation.Taking time to identify a nearby neighbour and acquainting them with your needs can provide peace of mind now as well as vital help following a disaster.
Before the Emergency
- Assess your own needs, capabilities – and limitations – and write them down. Be sure to include your requirements for special equipment and medications.
- Sketch your home’s floor plan. Mark the safest place for you to be, in each room, during an emergency.
Include exits, hallways, and alternate escape routes. Note obstacles that might make a safe exit difficult
and plan to remove those obstacles if possible. - Create a network of neighbours, relatives, friends and coworkers to assist you in an emergency. Discuss
your needs and make sure everyone knows how to operate necessary equipment.
