SHUNIAH, ON – April 27, 2017: There has been no reported power outages or road closures in the Municipality of Shuniah since the last situational update. Freezing rain started falling in Shuniah around 11:30am and changed to snow around 3pm.
Environment Canada has ended the freezing rain warning and special weather statement, and is reporting snow, mixed at times with ice pellets, will continue tonight, with additional 5 cm snow possible by Friday morning.
There is still ice build up on trees so beware of branches or electrical wires that could break under the weight of ice. Stay at least 10 metres from fallen power lines. If downed lines are across a roadway or on fire, call 9-1-1, otherwise they can be reported to Hydro One at 1 (800) 434-1235.
Shuniah road crews have been working continuously today and the Municipality added a grader to the road maintenance response. Roads are still snow and ice-covered. We recommend you allow extra time to reach your destination and ensure you leave extra space around your vehicle while driving.
Shuniah residents should continue to monitor road conditions and local forecasts. Hydro One outages can be tracked on their Storm Centre page. Further updates will be made available on our social media pages and our Emergency Information Page as available.
