Restricted Fire Zone – NO FIRES

SHUNIAH, ON (May 29, 2025) – Due to high to extreme forest hazard conditions, and to reduce the number of human-caused fires, the Ministry of Natural Resources will be implementing another Restricted Fire Zone (RFZ) for the Northwest Region to include zones 4, 9, 10 and 11. This expanded RFZ will come into effect Friday, May 30, at 12:01 AM local time. Shuniah is in zone 4.

Outdoor fires will be banned. Portable gas stoves may still be used BUT must be handled with extreme care. More details and a precise boundary of the RFZ in effect will be shared shortly.

The area impacted by the new RFZ is from south of the west side of St Ignace Island, west along the Canada–U.S.A. border, north along the District of Rainy River–District of Thunder Bay border, north along the English River system, east to the western boundary of the Brights and River Provincial Park, following north to and along the boundary of Wabakimi Provincial Park, south along the eastern side of the Little Jackfish River system, to the north end of Lake Nipigon, following the western shore of Lake Nipigon south to the west side of the Nipigon River system heading south to Red Rock and along the northeast boundary of Black Bay Peninsula to the west side of St. Ignace Island.

This will mean that all fire permit privileges will cease and no open fires or fireworks will be allowed within the municipality.  Residents can still use propane appliances but must be used with extreme caution, watched carefully, and be at least one metre from framable materials. More information about Restricted Fire Zones can be found on the Outdoor Fire Restrictions page of the Ministry of Natural Resources website.  Follow us on social media or check shuniahfire.com/emergency for updates specific to the Municipality of Shuniah.
